Willlkommen To Deutschland
History unfoldIng before our eyes, all around us. The artifacts, cathedrals, steeples and castles... One such Castle Schloss in Heidelberg began construction in the 1200's. Let me do the math right quick... 800+ years ago someone thought this bluff, this valley, this town needed a fortress of a castle that has endured for EIGHT HUNDRED YEARS... Retrofits, remodels and redesigns... now a tourist stop. We, Americans barely have 250 years. Certainly no castle-esque structures that will endure another 500 years.
The details taken into consideration then, the architectural designs and materials selections that were made... the word AMAZING doesn't quite cover it.
We strolled along the walkways and corridors, knowing there were house servants, soldiers, affluence that filled the same space we were now partaking of. Needless to say, we, along with all other touristy type couldn't quite grasped the magnitude of history
intertwined into this stone structure.
Munich was our first stop.... 8 hour flight from NYC... can we stop for a moment and acknowledge the connectivity we have via air travel. Not too many years ago, late 1800's travelers loaded up their worldly belongings onto a wagon pulled by horses and CAME WEST.... TAKING MONTHS...
POOOOOF..... now in the time it takes to cough and choke up phlegm for 8 hours, we're in a different country on another continent speaking a different language....(danke
google translate). Yes..... still fighting this pneumonia thingy, and not loving the Covid frightened stares or should I say GLARES... on the plane. Cleared (non contagious) to travel by the NYC Walkup Urgent Care MD. We boarded the plane, updated C19 negative
test and headed east, across the Atlantic.
Headed East @ 585Mph in -64 degree weather, we were thankful for the design team and engineers over at Airbus / Lufthansa
We first landed in an AIRBNB in Munich that looked very funky cool via pics, needless to say... things aren't always what they appear to be in the 'brochure'.. chronologically listed;
Debris in the shower that should of been cleaned up during cleaning.. (if it was cleaned)
No Wash or Hand towels w/ the postage stamp sized shower towel doubling as a Sanding disc for a carpenter. Stiff and able to stand on its own.... (Fabric Softner must be a prohibited item in DE)
Foreign Strand of someone else's hair in the bed
Leaking water tank
Antiquated Gas Stove circa 1947
Scratched Teflon Pans (toxic)
No Oven or Microwave
Dead Goldfish floating in bowl...
An adult movie had been shot there within the last 60 days...
I'll stop there, just be rest assured,
there was more.
Our nephew Josh & his wife Nicole joined us in Munich for the week and were a great assist on navigating restaurants and Christmas Markets. So feasts and walkabouts filled our time together. Josh is stationed in Vilseck Germany, Army Staff Sargent, so it was nice to have our own bodyguard of sorts. Between the two of us, we didn't let anything happen to our ladies.... I know... such chivalry.
The weather was so cooperative, cold but clear. No snow and honestly probably too cold to snow, one reading was 21 degrees F. Yes, I just used Fahrenheit as a measure and got stern looks from a few, as all of the rest of the world it seems uses metric. I'll admit, going 216kmh on the autobahn was hellacool in an Audi A6, I'll give props to Josh that hit 225kmh.... I'll let you do the math on that. Needless to say, momma wouldn't have approved.
We're off to Prague for Christmas and to see what kind of trouble we can stir up. My lovely bride is some kind of trouble maker. Loving, kindness abounds, patience of JOB and an intelligence that rivals world leaders... Ya think I'm a fan?
Ciao for now..
